A Good Caddie...

March 16, 2024

After a particularly bad round, a golfer proclaims, “I should just walk out into that water and drown myself.” The caddie responded, “With all due respect sir, you’d never keep your head down long enough.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        -Unknown Player and Caddie

Certain sporting events have a unique ability to transcend boundaries and captivate audiences around the globe. Among them are the prestigious championships that crown the pinnacle of their respective sports—the Super Bowl (especially if Taylor Swift is in attendance), World Series, Stanley Cup, NBA Finals, and World Cup.

However, there is a distinctive cluster of sporting events that have an unparalleled charm, beckoning both the casual fan and the enthusiast to their hallowed ground. These are the bucket-list destinations that offer the possibility of seeing history firsthand—Wimbledon, the Kentucky Derby, the Monaco Grand Prix, and perhaps most revered of all, the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

Augusta National is known for its lush fairways, meticulously manicured greens, and challenging layout. The Masters tournament is renowned for its traditions, the iconic green jacket and the ceremonial opening tee shot.

Monday, April 8, 2024, through Sunday, April 14, 2024, will mark the 90th anniversary of that first tournament. Horton Smith won the 1934 event with a 20-foot birdie putt to finish four under. Tournament co-founder and host Bobby Jones finished ten strokes back, tied for thirteenth place. The total purse was $5,000 and the winner's share was $1,500. This year, the total purse is $25,000,000. If you were curious, that is an average annual increase of just under 10%.

Jack Nicklaus, with the most Masters titles [six] commented, “Success depends almost entirely on how effectively you learn to manage the game’s two ultimate adversaries: the course and yourself.”

As you watch the tournament, you will notice each player is accompanied by one other person, their trusted advisor, their caddie. The caddie exists to help manage those adversaries – the course and yourself.

A good caddie…

Possesses an in-depth understanding of the course, including its layout, hazards, and best strategies for navigating each hole. They also have knowledge of their player's strengths, weaknesses, and playing style.

Tailors their advice to suit the individual player, offering club selection recommendations, course management strategies, and advice on reading greens based on the player's skill level and preferences.

Helps their player develop a strategic game plan for each round, considering factors such as wind direction, pin placements, and course conditions. They provide insights and adjustments throughout the round to perfect performance.

Effective communication and trust are essential between a caddie and their player. The player relies on the caddie's advice and expertise, trusting them to make informed decisions that will enhance their performance on the course.

Remains adaptable and supportive, offering encouragement and help even when challenges arise on the course. They adapt their strategies and advice based on changing conditions to help their player stay focused and motivated.

The caddie is not there to play the game, but to counsel, keep you calm and focused, often talking you out of the risky shot in favor of steady consistency.

We aspire to be a good caddie for our clients, a trusted guide focused on personalized ability and strategic guidance, tailored advice to suit individual preferences and circumstances, to provide support and communication, to help achieve success for you and your family.
